Fishing at Flaming Gorge and the
Green River
The Flaming Gorge Dam was completed in 1964. The lake is over
90 miles long and offers 375 miles of prime smallmouth shoreline.
The Gorge is world renowned for its abundance of Rainbow, Cutthroat,
Lake and Brown Trout and also offers anglers several other sport
fish found at the Flaming Gorge Reservoir including smallmouth
bass and kokanee salmon.
Flaming Gorge produces the best crop of trophy-class lake trout
of any lake in the lower 48 states. Sure, there are lake trout
in other waters, but nowhere will you find the resident population
as big and cooperative as within the 90 miles or so of azure
blue water that is Flaming Gorge. Lake trout, also called mackinaw,
grow pretty darn big. Flaming Gorge holds the Utah record for
the largest lake trout caught. It was 51 pounds and 8 ounces,
45 1/8 inches long, with a 31 3/4 inch girth. A large number
of 30 pound and up fish are caught at the reservoir each year.
From its source high in Wyoming's Wind River Mountains, the Green
River runs south into Flaming Gorge Country and Flaming
Gorge Reservoir. The Green River then flows crystal clear from
Flaming Gorge Dam, offering consistent temperatures and excellent
year-round fly fishing.
World renowned for its abundance of Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brown
trout, this clear stretch of the Green River offers some of the
best tail-water fishing in Utah. Surveys have recorded up to
20,000 trout per mile in its upper sections! The average size
of these fish will be from 16 to 19 inches, and can weigh from
2 to 4 pounds! There
are 28 fish-able miles of the Green River below Flaming Gorge
Dam.
There are several access points to Flaming Gorge. Because it
lies on the northeastern boarder between Wyoming and Utah there
are ramps at both ends of the reservoir. Just down the road you
can rent or launch your boat from the Lucerne
Marina in Manila, Utah.
Fishing is allowed year-round, 24 hours a day on both the reservoir
and the river. Reciprocal licenses are needed on Flaming Gorge.
For $10, Utah residents can fish the Wyoming side and vice versa.
Both Wyoming and Utah offer nonresident, short-term licenses
as well. The Utah
Fishing Proclamation or the Wyoming
Fishing Regulations guides can provide you with more information
about local fishing requirements.
